School Fools

{March 23, 2006}   Clarification

In response to a comment someone left on here (thanks for commenting, by the way), no, I’m not a bookworm. Haven’t read nonfiction for years, actually. Just because I don’t want to grow up not knowing shit about the world around me doesn’t make me a bookworm. It makes me a teenager who’s a bit different from everyone else. Other than that, I’m very normal. NOT a nerd, geek, bookworm, loser, or any other nice high school terminology. I have lots of friends, go to parties, get up at 6 to do my hair and makeup, and love shopping. That all is not very bookwormy behavior right there.

The reason why I didn’t reveal what I really thought was because, don’t forget, I’m stuck in this school until graduation. There’s no reason for me to encourage people to call me a bookworm. If you’ve ever been in high school, you know to avoid confrontation. It’s how people like me, who’re not exactly like everyone else, survive without having their high school years made miserable. If you want to flaunt how different you are and how much contempt you have for average people, you’re going to pay. Tough.

Ok. Apparently we do not share many similar views. In fact, we appear to be quite the opposites. But nevertheless, I respect your opinion. Mine is no more significant than yours.

However, I still don’t understand how simply acting the way you feel could ever cause anyone to somehow condemn you throughout high school, although “condemn” might be a little harsh of a word. If I learned anything in high school, if any of the people I met in college learned something, it was that there isn’t possibly any better way to go through high school than to make sure you be yourself and people know exactly where you stand. I had a friend named Mark who despised football, which was almost unheard of at our school, but people didn’t treat him any differently, except conversations about football never went really far with him. Of course, my school could of been different. Who knows.

I don’t know if you were referring to me, but I don’t flaunt individualism. Sorry if I gave you that impression. But I do feel strongly towards the average person. Not all my buds throughout high school and college were too bright, but after I got to know them they all spoke really deep and had a good sense of, well, common sense. And as far as I could tell, they fell in that grade range the majority of people. So after that I must say my respect for such people has grown immensely. But that’s just me. I’ll leave you to form your own opinions.

Actually, things are different at my school. I’m already made fun of for considering a 90 to be a low grade, since I can do much better and therefore expect much more of myself. Last year, I got mercilessly teased by people because I once wore the same pants twice in a week, and people decided that I don’t wash my clothes.

So I really have to be careful. Sure, I won’t get condemned for anything not normal that I do, but I might. And I don’t care to repeat last year’s experiences with that again.
